Your journey begins in Islamabad, where you are received at the airport and transferred to your hotel. After check-in, you are introduced to your tour briefing for the upcoming days. Depending on your arrival time, you may take a short orientation drive through the city. The contrast between Islamabad’s modern architecture and the natural backdrop of the Margalla Hills offers several warm up photographic opportunities, especially at sunset from Daman-e-Koh or the grand courtyard of Faisal Mosque.
The evening is kept relaxed to prepare for the early flight the next morning.
After an early breakfast, you proceed to Islamabad Airport for a spectacular mountain flight to Skardu. On clear days the aircraft passes close to Nanga Parbat and the high Karakoram peaks an ideal start for aerial photography if visibility allows.
Upon arrival in Skardu, you are welcomed by the crisp mountain air and dramatic rock formations surrounding the valley. From the airport, you continue directly toward the Kachura region. The drive is short but scenic, following winding roads lined with autumn-coloured poplar trees.
You check into your lodge near Lower Kachura Lake, famous for its serene waters and the quaint wooden architecture of the lakeside resort. After settling in, the afternoon is devoted to photographing Upper Kachura Lake. A short, easy walk leads you to a pristine alpine lake surrounded by golden autumn foliage. The stillness of the lake at this time of the year provides mirror-like reflections, making it ideal for long exposure and golden-hour photography.
You return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and rest.
Today you depart for Khaplu, a beautiful valley located east of Skardu. The drive itself is a visual journey first along the mighty Indus River, then following the Shyok River as the valley widens. The road passes by the Sarfaranga Cold Desert, where soft dunes and rugged mountains merge in stunning contrast. This is your first major landscape photography session of the day.
Continuing onward, you reach Khaplu, one of the most graceful and photogenic settlements in Baltistan. After checking into your heritage hotel or guesthouse, you explore Khaplu Palace and its surroundings. The palace courtyard, traditional wooden balconies and the terraced orchards glowing in yellow and amber tones offer countless compositions.
You then walk through the old village streets toward the historic Khanqah-e-Mualla. This is a treasured opportunity to photograph the interweaving of culture, people, and landscape monks in traditional attire, local families working in autumn orchards, and snow dusted peaks rising behind ancient structures.
The day concludes with sunset photography overlooking the Shyok River, where the fading light paints the valley in soft, warm hues.
Overnight in Khaplu.
After breakfast, you spend a final morning in Khaplu capturing early light over the river and the glowing poplar avenues. You then begin the journey back toward Shigar. The entry into Shigar Valley is marked by expansive farmlands, dramatic cliffs, and traditional stone houses surrounded by golden trees.
Upon arrival, you visit Shigar Fort an impressive restored structure that blends Tibetan, Balti and Islamic architectural elements. The fort area, village lanes and adjacent orchards provide rich material for cultural and architectural photography.
Later in the afternoon, you continue your return to Skardu. Depending on light and weather, you may stop at Satpara Lake or select river viewpoints for additional landscape shots.
You arrive in Skardu by evening and settle in for the night.
Today marks the long but exceptionally rewarding drive from Skardu to Hunza. The route follows the course of the Indus River, passing remote mountain hamlets, steep gorges and dramatic rock formations. By mid-day you reach the area near Gilgit, where the landscape shifts into wider valleys and more cultivated terraces.
Continuing north, the drive gradually becomes one of the most scenic in Pakistan. Snow peaks begin to appear, the river widens and as you enter central Hunza the first glimpses of Rakaposhi and Golden Peak dominate the skyline.
Upon arrival in Karimabad, you check into your hotel. In the late afternoon, you ascend to Duiker/Eagle’s Nest for sunset photography. This viewpoint offers a panoramic 360-degree view of the Hunza Valley, where the autumn colours contrast beautifully with the snow-capped mountains.
Overnight in Hunza.
After breakfast, you depart for Hopper Valley, a rugged region known for its dramatic glacier system. The drive takes you through small villages and terraced fields glowing with orange and golden autumn tones.
Upon reaching Hopper, you walk to several viewpoints overlooking the Hopper Glacier. The blend of dark ice, deep crevasses, and colourful surrounding cliffs creates unique textures ideal for wide-angle and telephoto photography. You will also encounter traditional stone houses and locals working in their fields, offering strong cultural photography opportunities.
In the afternoon you return to Karimabad, where you may explore Baltit Fort or capture the warm evening light on the surrounding peaks.
Overnight in Hunza.
Today you travel deeper into Upper Hunza, an area renowned for its iconic mountains and turquoise lakes. Your first major stop is Attabad Lake, formed in 2010, now famous for its intensely blue water that contrasts dramatically with the barren cliffs around it. The autumn foliage on the lake’s edges adds colour and depth to your compositions.
Continuing onward, you enter Gulmit and Shishkat regions, surrounded by towering peaks including the Passu Cones. After checking into your lodge, the remainder of the day focuses on photographing the Ghulkin Village terraces, suspension bridges and the soft afternoon light over the Passu Cathedral.
Overnight in Gulmit/Shishkat.
This day is dedicated to immersive photography in Upper Hunza. You rise early for a sunrise shoot near Passu Cones, capturing the first light striking the vertical spires. After breakfast, you explore Gulmit village ancient houses, intricately carved wooden mosques and residents working in autumn fields provide authentic human interest photography.
Additional options include hiking to viewpoints above Ghulkin Glacier, revisiting Attabad Lake for different lighting conditions or photographing the Hussaini Suspension Bridge, one of the region’s most famous structures.
This slow, immersive day ensures you fully capture the essence of autumn in Upper Hunza.
Overnight in Gulmit/Shishkat.
After an early departure, you continue your journey north toward Khunjerab National Park. As you ascend, the landscape gradually changes into high altitude grasslands and cold desert textures. Wildlife such as yaks, marmots and occasionally ibex may appear along the road.
At Khunjerab Pass the Pakistan-China border you reach one of the world’s highest paved border crossings. Here, the vast open plateau, dramatic clouds, and towering peaks create exceptional panoramic photography opportunities.
After spending ample time exploring and photographing the region, you return to Gulmit/Shishkat for a relaxed evening and post-sunset shooting near the lake or village.
Overnight in Gulmit/Shishkat.
Today you begin the long descent along the Karakoram Highway toward Besham. The journey takes you through dramatic changes in climate and landscape from the high Karakoram into the deep Indus Valley.
Several photography stops are planned along the way, especially near Chilas where rugged gorges, river bends and raw mountain textures dominate the scene.
You reach Besham by evening and check into your hotel for dinner and rest.
After breakfast, you depart for Islamabad. The final leg provides calmer landscapes and an opportunity to reflect on the wide range of environments you experienced from the still blue lakes of Skardu to the massive mountain walls of Upper Hunza.
Upon arrival in the capital, you are transferred either to your hotel or directly to the airport for your onward flight, marking the end of your photography expedition.
